Trip Preparation: Equipment
Bike gear/parts | Camping/medical equipment | Clothing | Issues for women
For camping, you need to have a multi-fuel stove suitable for kerosene, the most readily available liquid fuel in Tibet. Consider taking a spare one-litre fuel bottle to use for stocking up on fuel in Lhasa (as it can be difficult to get any outside the capital). Obviously, you will need a reliable tent that can endure alpine-like conditions.
You will need a compact and light sleeping bag (or a heavier-duty bag if you are primarily just trekking) and a sleeping mat. A silk sleeping bag liner adds very little weight but can add a season to your sleeping bag (plus it can be easily washed and dried).
Remember to take a good head torch (plus spare batteries) which can be worn for walking/cycling at night if need be. It is important to have at least one durable water bottle for your travels. Also, a larger than normal first-aid kit is essential for overland travel throughout Tibet.
See Tibet Overland for a comprehensive list of recommended camping, cooking and medical gear.
