Trip Preparation: Getting There

Mainland China > Tibet (o'land) | Mainland China > Tibet (air) | From Nepal

Flights from Chengdu to Lhasa depart twice daily in season. You must book your flight from a travel agent. A direct flight operates four times weekly between Xining and Lhasa; it costs approximately the same amount as the bus fare from Golmud to Lhasa and there is now a weekly Kunming-Lhasa flight (via Zhongdian).

For all of the abovementioned flights, independent travellers still have to purchase tickets from a travel agent: the agent will arrange your ticket and permit by including you in a temporary five-person 'tour party'.

Both Chengdu and Kunming are accessible by air and train from other main Chinese cities including Beijing, Xian, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. International flights exist into Chengdu from Bangkok and Singapore and into Kunming from Bangkok, Yangon, Vientiane, Singapore, Osaka and Kuala Lumpur.
