Trip Preparation: Getting There
Mainland China > Tibet (o'land) | Mainland China > Tibet (air) | From Nepal
Once inside Mainland China, most overlanders will try to reach Lhasa commencing from Chengdu, Kunming, Xining or Kashgar. See Tibet Overland for a km by km breakdown of the longer overland routes including the location of the main checkpoints en route.
The 1970km Qinghai-Tibet Highway from Xining to Lhasa via Golmud is the only overland route officially 'open' for independent travellers (albeit from the most isolated starting point). Most overlanders will take the train from Xining to Golmud then catch an overnight bus onto Lhasa. Very few cyclists or hitchhikers attempt the journey between Xining and Lhasa as water and food is scarce with only a few towns scattered along the main route.
The Sichuan-Tibet Highway links Chengdu to Lhasa. The most direct 2170km southern route goes through Litang and Markham and the 2430km northern branch goes via Derge and Chamdo. Both branches merge again near Pomda and then continue west to Lhasa.
