Trip Preparation: Travel Issues
Travel issues | Maps | When to go | Costs & budgets
There are several options for overland travel in Tibet. Flights are available into Lhasa (except during the winter months) and many independent travellers opt to fly one way then travel overland once in Lhasa. However, given that there are no internal flights in Tibet, in order to visit any main sights travellers will need to arrange some form of overland transportation (public bus, hired 4WD vehicle, bicycle or yak).
Apart from using public bus or minibus the most popular mode of travel for overland travellers in Tibet is by rented truck or land cruiser. Vehicles are usually rented in Lhasa (or Kathmandu) through officially sanctioned travel agents. It is also possible to strike a deal when you arrive in any other main town in Tibet. You won't be permitted to hire a land cruiser on your own. Almost invariably, you will need to hire a driver and a guide.
