1995 Demonstrations in Lhasa calling for independence, result in over 100 arrests. Gedhun Choekyi Nyima (age 6) is recognized by the Dalai Lama as the 11th Panchen Lama (he and his family were placed in house arrest in Beijing). China names Gyaltsen Norbu (age 5) as Panchen Lama.
1996 Patriotic re-education campaign launched with work teams visiting monasteries to 'correct' the historical, legal and religious opinions of monks and nuns.
1997 On 19 February Deng Xiaoping dies. US appoint a 'Special Coordinator for Tibet'.
1998 US President Clinton calls for Chinese leaders to negotiate with Dalai Lama.
2000 Karmapa Lama (the third highest Tibetan Buddhist leader) escapes into exile.
